Farming Today

A Norfolk farmer who was seriously injured in a farm accident describes how the lack of rural mobile phone signal could have cost him his life. Tim Kitson fell thirty feet onto a concrete floor when a walkway collapsed beneath him. He tried to ring 999 but the call failed to connect. He talks about how he would like to see rural phone connections improved. The most recent annual round of fish quota negotiations has just finished in Brussels. As the UK moves towards leaving the EU, we ask the National Federation of Fisherman's Organisation how the system would work once we're an independent coastal state. Real reindeer are often used as a prop at festive events and Santa's grottoes at this time of year - but the British Veterinary Association tells Anna Hill that reindeer have very specific welfare needs, which are not always taken care of when they are used as a tourist attraction. Continuing a week-long look at the use of data in farming, we hear about a system on a chicken farm which is hoping to improve both animal welfare and farm profits by using a wireless system to gather every detail of information about the flock. Presented by Anna Hill and produced by Emma Campbell.
