21/04/20 - Small scale cheese producers, dairy crisis, pub landlady and water contamination

Farming Today

Artisan cheese producers across the UK have been left with mountains of cheese after restaurants and delis were closed because of COVID-19. Now, a campaign is encouraging people to buy cheese online to safe the producers they love. Anna Hill speaks to one dairy farmer and cheese maker who has gone from losing 70% of sales...to running out of cheese! Social media has been full of videos of farmers having to ditch their milk down the drain. There is a surplus of milk caused by the closure of restaurants and coffee shops due to the coronavirus outbreak. DEFRA’s announced that Competition Law regulations are being eased so the many different parts of the liquid dairy industry can work better together, to avoid waste. So will it work? We hear from a new recruit for the Farming Today Audio Diaries - the landlady of the Winterbourne Pub in Wiltshire. And how can farmers prevent agrochemicals from getting into water courses? We get a virtual tour of a sprayer washing station. Presented by Anna Hill Produced by Heather Simons
