03/06/20 Scottish fishing & Brexit talks; selling milk direct; forestry report; crops for birds

Farming Today

As Brexit talks on fishing begin we speak to the Scottish Government about their stance on the negotiations. Fergus Ewing, Cabinet Secretary for the Rural Economy, says the industry needs to be flexible and pragmatic. He's also announced a package of aid for Scottish fisherman. Shell-fishing vessels will be able to catch other species of fish, to help them during the coronavirus pandemic and the government is providing £22 million in aid to Scottish fishermen affected by the Covid19 lockdown. The Coronavirus outbreak first sparked a crisis in the dairy industry. The closure of catering businesses led to a fall in prices and left some farmers with milk they couldn't sell. One dairy farmer in North Pembrokeshire has decided to take control by processing and selling his own milk directly to local customers. A new report says government plans for widespread woodland creation could be derailed if they don't deal with red tape and the lack of suitable land. The chief executive of the Royal Forestry Society Simon Lloyd says land owners are deterred from planting trees because they see it as too much of a risk. An arable farm is growing crops for wild bird food. Brinvale Farm in Leicestershire has seen a big increase in wildlife on their own land too.
