Future of Agriculture 014: Dr. Doug Sammons, Monsanto

Future of Agriculture

This interview will make you smarter.

Have you heard of "superpests"? This term refers to agricultural pests that develop resistance to agricultural chemicals and other applications. The more technical term for these "superpests" is multi-resistance.

Dr. Doug Sammons has dedicated his career to working with enzyme function and activity specifically around designing and adapting agricultural applications to manage pests (mainly dealing with insect pests).

If a farmer notices that an application is not working as expected Dr. Sammons would be called in as part of a team to assess exactly what is going on scientifically and creating an improved solution to dealing with the problem.

This is a fascinating topic that will not be going away. We are dealing with mother nature who is constantly adapting and changing. As we develop new technologies to grow food and fiber more efficiently, we will constantly need to be tweaking our processes to respond to a changing environment.
