01/08/20 - Farming Today This Week: Consultation announced on gene editing

Farming Today

The government have announced they are going to hold a consultation in the autumn on whether to allow gene editing. Some argue that it simply accelerates the process that would have happened anyway with selective breeding and help crops be, for example, more resistant to drought. But not everyone is convinced and say they've heard the same promises from those promoting genetic modification of crops with very little results. Charlotte Smith picks her way through the events that led to this consultation and hears from those both for and against its introduction, and looks at how trade discussions are influencing the discussion. All this plus the riveting moment when a peregrine falcon chick in Northern Ireland falls from its nest. Spoiler alert - it's okay! Producer: Toby Field
