12/10/20 How Covid 19 has affected rural Britain, high tech hens

Farming Today

As the number of new coronavirus cases continues to rise week on week, parts of the UK are bracing themselves for further restrictions. So this week we’re going to explore how Covid 19 is affecting life in rural areas. We’ll be hearing about the pressures and opportunities and how local communities are navigating them. Dr Ruth McAreavey from Newcastle University’s Centre for Rural Economy is researching change in rural areas and she’s been been perfectly placed to see what kind of impact Covid 19 is having. Farmers are increasingly using the ‘Internet of Things’ systems to improve animal welfare and farm efficiency. Sarah Swadling has been to meet free range egg producer Matt Dart in Devon to find out how it’s working for him, and his hens. Presented by Caz Graham and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
