11/12/20 The future for Scottish farmers, air pollution, sprouts

Farming Today

The Cabinet Secretary for the Rural Economy in Scotland, Fergus Ewing, outlines the future for Scottish farmers after the EU's Common Agricultural Policy. As agriculture is devolved, the four nations each have a different approach to what comes next. While England is phasing out direct payments to farmers from next year and paying public money only for public goods, which excludes food, Mr Ewing tells Charlotte Smith that food and direct payments will be at the heart of the new Scottish system. Air pollution in Scotland is ‘silently wreaking havoc’ across some of the country’s most important places. That’s according to a report from Plantlife commissioned by the Scottish government. Sprouts are grown year round, but the big challenge for growers is timing their harvest to meet Christmas demand. TH Clements in Lincolnshire harvest from August to March, but in the festive season, they pick ten times more than at any other time. Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
