13/08/21 - Buying Welsh farmland for offsetting, Local Nature Recovery Strategies, Where the red squirrels eat

Farming Today

Large-scale investment companies have been buying farms across Wales for afforestation - planting trees to offset carbon emissions. But there are concerns it could damage local culture, language and heritage, and there’s a call for Welsh Government to urgently review its forestry policy. The government has launched a consultation on its Local Nature Recovery Strategies, which is part of the new Environment Bill. Caz Graham asks Richard Benwell of Wildlife and Countryside Link about the process and what he'd like to see it achieve. For forestry week Caz has been to an estate near Penrith in Cumbria which produces commercial timber. She meets Jackie Dunne who gives her a tour and together they stumble upon a red squirrel dinner table! Presenter: Caz Graham Producer in Bristol: Toby Field
