The Trade Secretary Liz Truss has been calling for a more ‘proactive’ approach to forging trade deals with Asia and the Pacific, but at the same time the National Farmers' Union is calling on the Government to not allow British self-sufficiency in food to slip below its current 60%. We ask can trade and self-sufficiency work together. Ammonia released by the urine from cows can be harmful to both human health and the environment. Managing to capture the waste before it evaporates could make a significant difference. Scientists in France and Germany have been training calves to urinate in a specific place, so it can be captured and contained. We import more than a million tonnes of potatoes a year, much of it in processed form like the fries and wedges in supermarkets. But the British Potato still holds pride of place in most fish and chip shops. We hear from a farm which has set up a new on site chip processing plant.
