Change to bird flu restrictions, fall in the price of farm land, soil as a carbon store

Farming Today

New avian flu rules have been brought in overnight which will have an impact on how farmers keep their birds and how free range eggs and are sold. The price of agricultural land has fallen by 7% since last year, and further falls are being predicted. Could the fall be linked to Brexit? Because if farm subsidies end, payments to farmers for the land they own will end too. The massive store of carbon held in the soil is being lost gradually, but an initiative launched at the Paris climate talks in 2015 aims to help farmers store more carbon in soil. Tom Heap from Radio 4's Costing the Earth has been to meet farmer Thierry Deveaux, who's overhauled his production system to protect the soil and help it store more carbon. Presented by Anna Hill and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
