Privacy, Security, and Encryption - Part 2

Reboot The Toilet

INTRO

Hello and welcome to Terrifying Robot Dog! I'm Jonathan Stark - and I'm Kelli Shaver - and we are here to talk about how technology is changing the way we interact with the world.

This week:

Part 2 in our series on privacy, security, and encryption.

Please stay tuned, Terrifying Robot Dog is next...

HOUSEKEEPING

FEATURE

Regarding physical safety:

It's easy to imagine use cases for connecting a kitchen stove to the internet (e.g., pre-heat the oven to 450ΒΊ as you leave the office so you can pop a frozen dinner in as soon as you get home).

Now, what if a hacker turns on my stove top while my wooden cutting board happens to be sitting on it? The house prolly burns down.

Or imagine a hack that extinguishes the pilot light for several hours and then sparks the stove top - BOOM

Even just arriving home to a cacophony of running appliances and utilities would be pretty upsetting:

  • Vacuum cleaner running
  • Blender running
  • Coffee grinder running
  • Garbage disposal running
  • Washer running
  • Dryer running
  • Dishwasher running
  • All sinks, tubs, garden hoses running water full blast
  • Toilets flushing endlessly
  • Boiler clanging away because thermostat is maxed
  • A/C maxed
  • Fans blowing
  • Space heaters maxed

Add to that everything that has a bell, beep, or buzzer, and you've got a pretty jarring night on your hands:

  • TVs turned on full volume
  • Radios turned on full volume
  • Doorbell ringing constantly
  • Smoke detectors going off constantly
  • Alarm clocks going off constantly
  • Microwave oven (constant "done" beep)
  • Toaster oven (constant "done" beep)
  • Stove timer (constant "done" beep)
  • Stove (constant "up to temp" beep)
  • Dryer (constant "done" beep)
  • Washing machine (constant "done" beep)
  • Dishwasher (constant "done" beep)
  • Refrigerator (constant "door ajar" beep)

I can't even think about what would happen if a hacker could activate the sound modules on all my kids' toys simultaneously

(This is prolly a 100 years out, but... all bets are off once there's a humanoid robot in the home. If a hacker gains control of a "C3P0" in your kitchen, the possibilities for mayhem would be virtually limitless.)
