Farming Today

Charlotte Smith visits the Rural Life Centre in Surrey to explore what relevance countryside crafts have today. She meets John Cooksley, a Blacksmith, who makes everything from ornamental leaves to gates and bridges, and asks whether it's possible to make a living from this ancient craft. Susan Green and Elaine Horner from the West Surrey Guild of Spinners Weavers & Dyers show Charlotte how to make socks, and why it's so important to keep these skills alive. Hugh Jones, a green wood worker shows off his bespoke Hedgehog feeding stations, and Judy Hawkins talks Charlotte through how to make a Corn Dolly and why traditionally they've been a crucial part of harvest. There's also a chance to hear reports on timber frame buildings, Willow panniers and iron casting. Producer: Toby Field.
