Farming Today

Abattoirs, Welsh livestock rules and Scottish 'super-honey'.

Farming Today

Over the next year, all English abattoirs will have to fit CCTV by law. The Food Standards Agency, which licenses slaughterhouses in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, says it will provide extra reassurance on animal welfare. New rules on moving livestock in Wales come in to force this morning. While the Welsh Government says the changes will improve biosecurity, some pedigree breeders say extra costs imposed on them will discourage them from showing their animals at many local agricultural events. Hopes are being pinned on a new 'super honey' which may have health qualities equal to some New Zealand honeys imported for medical applications. Researchers in Edinburgh believe it could help in the battle against antibiotic-resistant superbugs. Presented by Charlotte Smith. Produced by Vernon Harwood.
