Greenpeace on post-Brexit trade, Crofting, Straw shortage

Farming Today

We hear claims from Greenpeace that lobby groups are pushing for lower food standards to secure a post-Brexit trade deal with the United States. But the group denies the UK's precautionary principal would be undermined. This week we're looking at small farms. Today we look at the Scottish crofting system, where a small piece of land is worked either by tenants or owner occupiers. The high price of straw bedding is causing concern for livestock farmers around the UK. In some cases it has trebled since October to around £180 a tonne. Poor weather conditions last spring are to blame along with the fact that straw is now being used as a source for some renewable energy industries. Presented by Anna Hill and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
