Farming Today

Free-range egg labelling, sheep still buried in Beast from the East snow, fodder crisis

Farming Today

Does the 'free-range' label on our eggs tell us enough about how the hens are kept? One egg producer in Somerset believes there is room for more clarity within the 'free-range' label, because the way free-range hens are kept varies between farms. Hundreds of sheep died after being trapped in snowdrifts following the Beast from the East snowstorm, and it's thought many are still buried in the snow. In the absence of government aid, the Cumbria Farmer Network distributed payments to affected farmers, but their funding is running out and many farmers are yet to be paid. Sustained rain and cold and lack of spring sunshine means the grass isn't growing and many farmers across the UK haven't been able to turn their livestock out onto often waterlogged fields. This means they're having to spend thousands of pounds on extra feed which is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Presented by Caz Graham and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
