Anna Hill looks into the economics of renewable energy generated on farm. Whilst government subsidies are now lower than a few years ago, the cost of solar panels has reduced, meaning income for farmers can be about the same. The Environmental Audit Committee today claims there has been a dramatic fall in investment in renewables, which is threatening the Government's ability to meet legally binding climate change targets. Thomas McMillan, Head of Energy Consulting at Savills, gives Anna an overview of the state of play of the economics of renewable energy in agriculture.
Knowing where your food comes from can help you to make healthy choices, but if you've never seen a cow before how can you make informed decisions about eating beef? As Marieclare Carey-Jones finds out, it can be a real issue for youngsters growing up in urban areas, which is why the pupils at Marshfield Primary School in Newport, Gwent have just been visited by the Cows On Tour.
This week Farming Today's looking at the egg industry. Today, Anna visits Havensfield Happy Hens in East Anglia, free range egg producers who are branching out into free-range liquid egg. The eggs they use are ones they can't sell because shells might be uneven or slightly cracked. Using specialised equipment, the eggs are broken and mixed, and the egg is gently pasteurised before being stored.
