Farming Today

Soft Fruit, Carbon Dioxide Shortage and Konik Horses

Farming Today

The UK soft fruit harvest has started with fresh strawberries now in the shops. But the industry body British Summer Fruits has told Farming Today that it urgently needs information from the Government about a new post-Brexit Seasonal Workers' Scheme as growers want to know how they will recruit temporary fruit pickers from the EU. The shortage of CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) throughout Europe is continuing to cause concerns in the food and drinks industry. But Henry du Val de Beaulieu, who farms for energy in Hampshire, says more diversity in the industry and a network of bio-gas plants like his could help avoid future stoppages. A herd of wild horses have been released on Welsh moorland to help restore the habitat to its natural state. Konik horses are descendants of the now extinct European horse, the Tarpan, and are grazing on hillsides near Machynlleth in Mongomeryshire. Presented by Charlotte Smith. Produced by Vernon Harwood.
