Pressures on food security, small abattoirs, antibiotic use on farms, potato drones

Farming Today

The safety of our food, and security of supply, will be discussed today at the annual conference of LEAF, Linking Environment And Food. We hear from Chief Executive Caroline Drummond. Over the last few years many smaller abattoirs have closed, but in Shetland producers formed a livestock marketing cooperative and built a part-time abattoir. The chief medical officer, Dame Sally Davies has been quoted saying that shoppers should buy organic or "high welfare meat" to help fight the threat of antibiotic resistant bugs. Gwyn Jones, chairman of the Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture Alliance (RUMA) gives his reaction. We visit a farm using drone technology to help grow potatoes. Presented by Anna Hill and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
