Farming Today

Public money for public good in fishing, re-introducing wolves, rural isolation and a new forest for Northern Ireland

Farming Today

The latest report on the restoration of EU fish stocks has mixed news: fewer species are being overfished and more stocks are stable, but the report also finds that progress is too slow. But after Brexit, should UK fishers be financially rewarded for being more sustainable? We hear from a campaigner at the charity Sustain, who says the "public money for public good" approach should apply to fishing too. Wrapping up a week of features about rewilding, we visit one of the longest running projects in the UK - Alladale in the North of Scotland. The landowner there wants to reintroduce wolves into a 50,000 acre site surrounded by a 9 foot electric fence. But hill walkers say the fence would hamper their right to roam. After travelling the country to talk to rural communities, the Royal Society of Arts' Food, Farming and Countryside Commission has concluded that the popular idyllic view of country living means London-based policymakers often aren't aware of the social and financial challenges. We hear more and get a sneak preview of a film the RSA has produced about rural isolation and poverty with the aim of reconnecting decision makers with the realities of life outside the capital. And in Northern Ireland, thousands of new trees are being plants to expand and protect an ancient woodland. Presented by David Gregory-Kumar Produced by Heather Simons
