The state of rural shops; Sonny Perdue, new US Agriculture Secretary

Farming Today

Who is George Ervin Perdue III? The last of President Elect Trump's cabinet, Charlotte Smith hears the lowdown on the new US Agriculture Secretary. A former Governor of Georgia, he trained as a vet and once held a vigil to pray for rain during a drought. The state of the UK's rural shops. James Lowman of the ACS, the Association of Convenience Stores, tells Charlotte about the challenges facing the UK's 19,000 rural shops. Many are family-owned and staffed by ageing workers, similar in a sense to the demographics of UK farming. But there are signs of resilience, as shops or village pubs incorporate other functions such as a post office. Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Mark Smalley.
