20/09/2019 GM crops, Otters on the farm, Irish beef

Farming Today

Almost all of the cotton, soya beans and corn grown in the USA is genetically modified, yet here in Europe only one GM crop is approved for commercial growth - a maize grown mostly in Spain. At the end of our week examining GM crops Charlotte speaks with a former advisor to the US State Department about why he thinks we should all adopt their attitude to the technology. She then gets a response from a campaigner from Friends of the Earth who takes a very different view. A Cumbrian dairy farm has become a haven for otters and other wildlife; we have a report from the river bank. And why are Irish farmers picketing their abattoirs? There’s a Europe wide glut of beef which is depressing prices for all farmers. Presented by Charlotte Smith Produced by Alun Beach.
