Farming Today

03/01/20 - The value of auction marts, the cost of black grass and innovative hydro-power.

Farming Today

A livestock market is a place to buy and sell animals - but it's also an important meeting point for farmers as well as somewhere to see a doctor, a lawyer or a chaplain. So what is the true value of the auction mart to the rural community? The Princes Countryside Fund has commissioned some research to find out. Does the UK need a National Action Plan to tackle black grass? A new study suggests herbicide resistance in the arable weed is costing the UK £400 million a year and 800,000 tonnes of lost wheat yields. And we visit a new hydro-power scheme which could be cheap enough to be replicated on individual farms across the UK. Presented by Charlotte Smith Produced by Heather Simons
