12/03/20 - The Budget, rare breed lamb and import food standards

Farming Today

Farmers are perhaps breathing a sign of relief after the Budget. Many of the expected measures didn't materialise - for example, agriculture will be exempt from the removal of the tax relief on red diesel. Rural groups welcomed the extra money announced for research and development - but called for more of it to go to the agri-tech sector. And green groups say a 640 million pound "Nature for Climate" fund - which will plant 30,000 hectares of trees and restore 35,000 hectares of peatland - doesn't go far enough. What difference does a sheep breed make? We visit a farm in Derbyshire where they're busy lambing their Portland sheep, which produce meat that can be sold at a premium. And as a visit from the American Agriculture Secretary draws near - part of the ongoing charm offensive before the US and UK try to agree a trade deal - we look at the legality of imported food standards.
