04/09/20 Nitrate credits, fall in demand for wild venison, the pigs benefiting from lockdown pub closures

Farming Today

We hear about a new and controversial approach to allowing house building in a sensitive area - nitrate credits. Developers can pay environmental groups to reduce nitrate levels in one area, so allowing homes to built in another. The Wild Venison Working Group has been set up to reverse the fall in demand for wild venison. The deer population is at its highest for a thousand years but, partly due to Covid-19, sales of venison are down. The closure of pubs during lockdown has benefited pigs. All this week we’ve been talking about animal feed and for some pigs that's meant a few pints. Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
