02/11/2020 Rural crime. Falling fish sales. Bath City Farm.

Farming Today

All week we're looking at rural crime. It cost the UK 54 million pounds last year, an increase of almost 9% on the year before according to insurers. Yet the National Rural Crime Survey found that only a quarter of respondents thought their local police were doing a good job. Chair of the National Rural Crime Network Julia Mulligan, who's also the conservative Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire, says progress to implement the national rural crime strategy is "woeful". She wants an urgent review of the way policing in rural areas is funded. Fishermen are becoming increasingly concerned about a slump in sales due to the coronavirus lockdown. The run up to Christmas is vital for sales and helps them through the lean winter months. But restrictions across Europe and in the UK are having a big impact on the market. Bath City Farm celebrates its 25th birhday. It was a dairy farm before it was taken over by the community. During the pandemic it has been a local lifeline - supplying meals and support.
