02/12/20 - Reaction to the Agricultural Transition Plan and seasonal workers after Brexit

Farming Today

This week DEFRA released it's Agriculture Transition Plan - which lays out a timeline for introducing a new system of farm payments post Brexit. Under the new Environmental Land Management Schemes - or ELMS - farmers will no longer get paid per acre of land, but for the benefits they bring to society through things like cleaner air and water, better soil, wildlife habitats, enhancing landscapes and preventing flooding. But, some are concerned there will be a gap between phasing out the old payments and bringing in the new. We get reactions from across the industry. And, with a month to go till the end of the Brexit Transition Period, we look at what it will mean for seasonal labour on farms.
