The first chair of the new Office for Environmental Protection will be Dame Glenys Stacey. The OEP will effectively replace the European Commission in overseeing compliance with environmental law and holding the Government to account. While the Government insists it will be a strong and independent body, critics have described it as a โ€˜toothless regulatorโ€™. How sustainable farming can boost economic recovery was discussed yesterday by farmers and food businesses at the Sustain annual conference. Sustain campaigns for a better food system, its CEO Kath Dalmeny says food and farming can lead an economic recovery. As weโ€™ve heard this week growing brassicas can be challenging, which is why new field trials run jointly by the East of Scotland Growers Co-operative and the levy body, AHDB, are investigating new ways of minimising disease.
