Representatives from the Scottish meat industry tell us that plans to change livestock transport rules in England and Wales could seriously impact business across the border in Scotland. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is currently consulting on measures including reducing the length of time animals can be kept in transit, the space they have, and how hot or cold it can be on board. Some UK firms say they have been told to set up subsidiaries in the EU to avoid disruption under new trade rules - although the Department of Trade has told the BBC this is ‘not government policy’. The Cheshire Cheese company has stopped selling its gift boxes to the EU because the certification has made it too expensive to export. A start-up company led by researchers at Imperial College has won a Young Innovators Award for their idea to make commercial fish-feed from plant based oils instead. Farmed fish are typically fed on large quantities of wild-caught fish - which are turned into pellets containing fish oils. And as we continue our week looking at dairy, we look at how milk producers are benefitting from an increase in demand for home milk deliveries.
