Firms looking to offset their carbon emissions usually talk about planting trees, so the news that Microsoft is using Australian cattle ranches as carbon sinks has come as a bit of a surprise. But could it also be a pointer to a potential new source of income for British farmers? Twenty years ago this week, a vet identified foot and mouth disease in pigs at an abattoir in Essex, beginning one of the darkest episodes for British agriculture in generations.
