03/03/21: Gene editing consultation, gene edited livestock, horse milk

Farming Today

The Government’s consultation on gene editing is currently open to everyone for comment, but the campaign group Beyond GM has filed a complaint with the Defra about how it’s being run. They say the tone of the consultation is biased, and claim Westminster is ‘breaking its own rules’. Defra says that the aim of the consultation is to gather extensive views and evidence to inform any next steps. At the moment under EU regulations gene editing is governed in the same way as genetic modification and so heavily restricted. We hear about the potential for gene editing in livestock farming. And you might have tried goats' milk, sheep milk or oat milk - but what about horse milk? A Somerset farmer has diversified into producing organic mare's milk, which he sells online. Presented by Anna Hill and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
