Covid-19: what do we know about the variants first detected in India?

With restrictions in England due to be further relaxed on 17 May, new coronavirus variants first detected in India are spreading across the UK. Public Health England designated one, known as B.1.617.2, as a βvariant of concernβ last week. It is now the second most common variant in the country.
