16/07/21 Farm vet shortage, showy sheep, woodland crofts

Farming Today

We hear warnings of a shortage of farm vets which is leaving some farmers without cover. The UK is short of vets and the long hours and pressures of the job are putting newcomers off, particularly in large animal work. The Government has added vets to the shortage occupation list, to make it easier for overseas professionals to work in Britain and two new vet schools have also been set up, but in the short term the lack of vets is causing problems. We’ve been talking about agricultural shows all week. Some are going ahead this summer, but others have been cancelled for a second year in a row. For farmers unable to show their livestock that's disappointing, and can also hit their businesses. And we hear from a woodland crofter in Scotland.
