Northern Ireland Agriculture Minister, Edwin Poots, says GPS technology could be used to reduce the need for checks on products travelling from Great Britain for use in Northern Ireland. Under the Northern Ireland Protocol, products travelling from Great Britain and Northern Ireland are subject to checks to make sure they comply with EU standards. Since leaving the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy, part of the Government’s plan for farming in England includes an ‘exit scheme’ for those who want to leave the industry. A consultation was held over the summer, and ended in August, but farmers are still waiting for the final details of the scheme, which is supposed to open next year. The consultation suggested giving farmers a lump sum of just over 2 times their normal Basic Payments in return for selling or renting out their land. The payments would be capped at 100 thousand pounds. And we visit a dairy in Wales to find out about a local cheese with a Dutch heritage.
