Big data on farm, county council farm tenancies, golf course debate, UNESCO Women in Science Laureate

Farming Today

Big data, collecting terabytes of information from a multitude of sources, is something many say will revolutionise farming. But how? Some examples are already up and running here in the UK as farmers join with researchers to see just how useful all this information might be. This week we're taking a closer look at tenant farms, where the farmer doesn't own the land or property where they live. A traditional way for new and younger farmers to come into the business is often through county council farm tenancies. But these opportunities are becoming more rare, as councils' cash is squeezed. An American golf course developer is the latest to challenge environmentalists with his claim that his plans for a coastal site in Scotland won't devastate internationally important land. A leading plant scientist, whose work has helped select crops which will cope with climate change, has won the prestigious UNESCO Women in Science Laureate award. Presented by Anna Hill and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
