Farming Today

Chlorinated Christmas turkey, Chilli farm, New arrivals on Scottish island

Farming Today

With just a week to go before Christmas, a group of leading food policy experts is warning that our festive turkeys could be affected by any future trade deals with the United States, after Brexit. A paper published today warns that the UK might have to accept turkeys washed in chemicals, which are not currently allowed under EU regulations. Sybil Ruscoe speaks to one of the report's authors. Many small island communities struggle to retain their residents, but the Scottish island of Papa Westray is managing to attract new incomers. In the last census in 2011, the population of this tiny Orkney island was recorded as 90 - but that's a 38% increase since 2001. We ask what its secret is. And we report from a chilli farm in Wiltshire, where 80,000 bottles of chilli sauce are sold in the run-up to Christmas. Presented by Sybil Ruscoe and produced by Emma Campbell.
