Farming Today

Lambing in the snow, food waste on farms, the power of slurry and preparations for No Deal

Farming Today

An unexpected dump of snow has hit farms in the North of England and Scotland in the middle of lambing. We visit a sheep shed in Cumbria's Eden Valley to find out how farmers are coping. Millions of tonnes of perfectly edible food is wasted on farms each year because of the way it looks. We hear about a research project that's using smart technology to help farmers meet supermarket specifications for salad potatoes. We visit a farm in Wales which is taking part in a trial with the University of South Wales to monitor the gas produced in slurry pits to see if it would be a viable source of power for the future. And thousands of food and farming businesses will not be able to trade with the EU in the case of a No Deal Brexit. Businesses that currently only trade within the EU, need to register for an EORI number to allow them to continue exporting in the case of a No Deal Brexit. But DEFRA Secretary Michael Gove has revealed that out of 145,000 businesses that need a number... only 60,000 have registered so far. Presented by Charlotte Smith Produced by Heather Simons
