03/05/19 - Robert Goodwill, Withdrawal of general licences, Sika deer

Farming Today

As Farming Today reported last week following a successful legal challenge from the campaign group Wild Justice, Natural England revoked general licences to allow the shooting of certain species of birds. One week on from that decision and individual licenses are now available, but Ian Danby from the British Association of Shooting and Conservation tells Charlotte Smith that the system isn't working fast enough for farmers. The new Farming Minister, Robert Goodwill, tells Charlotte that he's disappointed with Natural England's handling of this situation and wants more to be done. He also gives his reaction to recommendations from the Committee for Climate Change that more can be done to lower the carbon footprint of agriculture, and he speaks about the delay in processing applications for seasonal workers from outside the EU. For our week on invasive species Nancy Nicolson's been out looking for Muntjac and Silka deer, and why culling them is a necessary part of controlling numbers. Producer: Toby Field
