Footpath diversions to protect livestock, straw shortage, food waste

Farming Today

Do farmers need new legislation to divert walkers off their land, in order to keep dogs away from vulnerable livestock? We hear from both the Country Land and Business Association and the Ramblers. There are warnings this year that straw could be in short supply. A combination of poor grain harvests across Europe and demand for straw by power stations means supplies are falling and the price has risen. This week we're exploring how farmers and food retailers are tackling waste. We visit a not-for-profit company in Gloucestershire which donates surplus fruit from farms and gardens to cafes and restaurants. Presented by Anna Hill and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
