02/06/20 Pressures on the countryside as lockdown eases, new Red Tractor labels and conservation grazing

Farming Today

As the coronavirus lockdown eases, rural beauty spots are feeling the pressure as crowds head to the countryside. Roads blocked with traffic; rubbish; gates left open; dogs running off the lead; these are just some of the problems. Chris Woodley-Stewart, Director of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is working with the police, Natural England and local councils to try to find some solutions. The Red Tractor certification scheme is introducing more tiers to labels for chicken including free range, enhanced welfare and organic. We ask CEO Jim Moseley if these extra tiers can be communicated to shoppers through a small label. A Welsh beef farmer is using conservation grazing to create wildlife friendly landscapes which have seen the return of lapwings.
