31/07/20 KFC chicken welfare report, GM moths, illegal shellfish

Farming Today

More than a quarter of the chickens grown for the fast food chain KFC have problems with their feet, and 12% have ammonia burns, caused by ammonia from the waste of other birds. How do we know? Because KFC has just published its first welfare report. It's thought to be the first company to do such a thing and reveal both the bad and the good in its supply chain. A team of scientists in Oxford believe that by using GM techniques they’ve developed a way of dealing with a global pest, a moth which eats brassica crops. We hear a warning that illegally gathered shellfish could lead to serious food poisoning. It comes from Cornwall's Port Health Authority which says there have been a spate of poaching incidents at beaches and estuaries around the county. Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
