14/12/20 Changes to livestock transport, turkey farmers, ash dieback research

Farming Today

Today, we hear warnings over proposed rules on transporting animals in England and Wales. Farming unions, hauliers and meat processors are meeting later today to discuss government proposals which they describe as a ’bombshell’ that could disrupt the food supply chain. With many of us having smaller celebrations because of Covid restrictions this year, demand for turkeys has been a bit different than usual. Charlotte Smith visits a family in Essex who've been farming turkeys for generations. It's feared that more than a hundred million ash trees could disappear from the countryside, killed by ash dieback disease. But researchers at the University of Warwick say they've identified chemical compounds in the leaves of ash trees, which can help find trees which are naturally resistant to this fungal infection. Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
