Farming Today

International trade, Market garden, NFU presidential election

Farming Today

With just over 12 months to go until the UK leaves the European Union, there's increasing pressure on the government to secure the best possible trade deal for British food producers. At the NFU conference in Birmingham, farmers have been asking detailed questions about how future international trade might work. Emma Campbell gets some insight from the UK's Ambassador to the World Trade Organisation, Julian Braithwaite; while Anna Hill speaks to Shanker Singham from the Legatum Institute - a Conservative think-tank that favours a hard Brexit - to find out how the UK's attitude towards international trade might impact negotiations. All this week Farming Today is shining a spotlight on small farms. Thanks to new selling platforms and growing consumer interest in provenance, there are growing opportunities for even the smallest producers. Grown Green is a sustainable market garden in Wiltshire, set in a few acres of land hired from a local beef farm. Set up by Kate Collyns in 2010, it grows vegetables, herbs and salads in a handful of fields and polytunnels; and despite its compact size, business is building. Kate believes it's a model that can work for others looking for a way into horticulture; Lucy Taylor went to meet her. The National Farmers Union has just elected a female President, for the first time in its 110-year history. Wiltshire beef producer Minette Batters was voted in by members of the NFU Council. She has been serving as the deputy president for the past four years, and is also known for founding the group 'Ladies in Beef'. She tells Anna how it feels to be at the helm of Union. Presented by Anna Hill; produced by Lucy Taylor.
